You might have seen them in a first aid or survival kit or tossed one into the glove compartment in your car. They are shiny and silver and look like "huge sheets of aluminum foil", but survival blankets have so much more potential. Made from a metalized plastic film: Mylar, and used for various purposes by NASA, this two-sided material either reflects or conserves heat. Today, its uses spread far beyond simple blankets or even space suits. Mylar is a component in fire fighting uniforms, candy wrappers, water pipe insulation, and pizza delivery bags. Due to the lightweight and compact nature of Mylar, it is perfect for survival or "space" blankets. Whether stored in your glove compartment, included in your first aid kit for shock victims, or added to your pocket before a hike, survival blankets have a multitude of uses.
Mylar blankets can be duct taped into a sleeping bag shape, which prevents drafts and helps retain ninety percent of your body heat. Good for either protection from the cold or heat, survival blankets can be used to cover the windows in your car or home. It can also be used over the walls of your tent. The shiny side of the Mylar reflects heat, so face it outward when you want to stay cool. Try covering an umbrella with a survival blanket when you are on the beach to maximize the shade. In emergency situations, survival blankets can be used as impromptu tents. The reflective side of the blanket can also be used as a signal similar to a mirror. Mylar is thin enough it can be cut easily, making it ideal for turning into bandanas, hats, or other emergency clothing needs.
Survival blankets are waterproof. Depending on the situation, this can be life saving or simply very convenient. Lay down a survival blanket before sitting on wet grass, snow, or sand. Or try it under your sleeping bag when camping for a warmer, dryer experience. Wrapping your feet in small sheets of Mylar can keep them both warm and dry. Blankets laid out overnight can collect dew, or a blanket can be used to line a leaky bucket.

Nearly every time we go camping as a family this meal is included at least once. It is extremely easy to make, especially when cooking over a campfire. Naturally you need aluminum foil to make it happen but as I said, it is an easy way to cook yourself a meal. Around our neck of the woods, we call this meal a Turtle-Nomad
______________________________________________________________
One of the simplest meals you can make while camping is a foil-wrapped dinner. It has an added bonus of being easy to assemble and to cook, plus everyone can prepare the dinner the way he or she wants it. This makes it a great dinner for getting the kids involved in campfire cooking because they can make up their own packet.
Basically, this meal is kind of like a one-pot dinner, like a pot roast. It's the steam inside the sealed foil packet that really does the cooking, so keep this in mind when you choose your ingredients. Here is our suggested list:
One-quarter pound ground beef patty or boneless chicken breasts
One large onion, peeled and cut in half
One large potato, cut into sections no bigger than an egg
One large carrot, sliced
You can use any kind of meat (or even seafood) that you prefer. Back in our Boy Scout days, we mostly used ground beef. The grease cooking into the potatoes, onion and carrot gave everything a wonderful flavor, even though it might not have been all that great for our arteries.
A healthier choice, which we've made recently, was a boneless, skinless chicken breast. Just be sure to use some seasoning (Old Bay is a good choice) because the chicken won't have the same bold flavor as ground beef.
Ground beef and boneless chicken breasts are pretty forgiving about their cook times, but if you are a bit more attentive a good piece of fish, such as cod, is really delicious steamed in a foil packet. Just be sure not to overcook it.
Foil dinners are just as delicious made without meat. Just sprinkle the veggies with your choice of seasoning to add zing before sealing the foil wrappers.
Use a heavier duty foil for this meal. (Lacking that, we recommend double wrapping your foil dinners.) Use a piece about 18-inches long. Put in the meat, sliced potatoes, carrots and onion. Add a little water to help generate steam. Don't forget the salt and pepper. Now fold over the foil and seal tightly. You don't want the steam to escape or any ashes to get in.
For this foil dinner, you want nice hot coals, not roaring flames, so allow the fire to die down. Using a stick or better yet a camp shovel, make a depression in the coals and lay in the foil packet. You can then shovel or nudge more coals on top for an even heat. Allow a good half hour for cooking. It's not really necessary to flip your foil packet as long as it has good, even exposure to the coals.
Remove from the fire and unwrap to test for doneness. (Don't lean in too close because the steam can be wicked hot right from the packet.) You can always seal it up again and replace on the coals, but thirty minutes should be sufficient.
Now, sit back and enjoy your dinner. The second best part, after eating, is that there are no dishes to wash. Just crumple up your packet and throw it away.

Floods are one of the most common naturally occurring hazards in the United States. Their impact can range from a small, localized area, such as a neighborhood or community all the way up to an entire river basin, spread out of multiple states. Floods can and do happen all of the time and the only thing that is common with all floods is the water because some floods develop slowly over a period of days while flash floods develop suddenly, without warning. They can appear suddenly, without any visible signs of rain and often have a dangerous wall of roaring water that carries rocks, mud, and other debris and can sweep away most things in its path. Overland flooding occurs outside a defined river or stream, such as when a levee is breached, but still can be destructive. Flooding can also occur when a dam breaks, producing effects similar to flash floods.
Be aware of flood hazards no matter where you live, but especially if you live in a low-lying area, near water or downstream from a dam. Even very small streams, gullies, creeks, culverts, dry stream beds, or low-lying ground that appear harmless in dry weather can flood. Every state in the United States is at risk from this hazard.
If you live in an area that has the potential to flood you should take precautions now to protect your property. You can do this by:
• Avoid building in a floodplain unless you elevate and reinforce your home.
• Elevate the furnace, water heater, and electric panel if susceptible to flooding.
• Install “check valves” in sewer traps to prevent flood water from backing up
into the drains of your home.
• Construct barriers to stop floodwater from entering your home.
• Seal walls in basements with waterproofing compounds to avoid seepage.

I just read an excellent post on Utah Preppers about Financial Preparedness and why you need to think about the lean times during times of plenty. In my humble opinion, only a fool would spend every dime they make and not lay a little aside, "just in case."
As this post expertly points out, TEOTWAWKI can occur at anytime, to anybody. It doesn't have to be a complete societal breakdown. It can be as localized as your company shutting down or sickness befalling a family member. The unexpected, is no respecter of persons, and can offer up life changing situations, at the drop of a hat.
The only way to smoothly transistion between times of plenty and complete chaos is a well thought out contingency plan that includes an adequate store of food, cash, and other resources.

The bodies are piling up in Detroit. Since the start of the Economic Collapse many of Detroit's jobless have been unable to afford to costs associated with burying their dead. Instead, they have left them in the morgue in a permanent "John Doe" status.
A handful of the bodies have been there for years but the majority have shown up since the economic collapse began. Detroit was once known for having the highest median income and home ownership rates in the US but today it is in the midst of a long and agonizing death spiral, where the dead are not even afforded the dignity of a proper Christian burial.
Unfortunately, the dead may be the lucky ones in Detroit as the city is facing an 28% unemployment rate that is higher than the worst years of the Great Depression. "The murder rate is soaring. The school system is in receivership. The city treasury is $300 million short of the funds needed to provide even the most basic services such as trash collection. Thousands of homes have been abandoned with their roofs completely ripped off and the windows smashed. Block after block of shopping districts lay boarded up. Many of the former manufacturing plants now lay abandoned and rotting. Even Michigan’s Central Station, which was designed by the same people who gave New York its Grand Central Station, was abandoned 20 years ago. Detroit is in such bad shape that a photographer who produced a series of images for Time magazine said that he often felt, as he moved around parts of Detroit, as though he was in a post-apocalyptic disaster.
People are fleeing Detroit by the troves and now even the dead are being refused the basic dignity that we humans have come to expect. Detroit is a mirror for the rest of the country. What happens there can happen to the rest of us. Article Source: Unburied bodies tell the tale of Detroit

This was just an experiment and it worked great for me. I took a plastic juice jug which I have plenty of and made a Ultra Mirco Greenhouse. I just cut the jug in two, placed some compost inside and planted my seeds. Add a little water and put the top half back on, be sure to replace the lid this also it helps to keep the heat and the water inside. I only watered them when I first planted them and that's it. Seeds sprouted in just a few days. Set them in the window sill so they can get some sun and watch them grow. After your sprouts get a few inches high move them into a lager container. This is a great idea to get a jump start on your Victory Garden. Raising food is a must for any long term survival situation or self sufficent life.
I used what I had on hand at the time which must be practiced in these situations.

Regular car care and maintenance is essential for keeping a vehicle in top condition and extending the life of the vehicle. Many of the routine services can be done quickly and easily yourself. Others require more professional assistance and should be taken to a Delaware County repair center. But, whether performed yourself or done by a mechanic, regular maintenance and upkeep of a vehicle is essential. Following the three most necessary car care tips will help ensure a long lasting vehicle and prevent more costly repairs in the future.
1. A vehicle's fluids should be checked regularly. On average, oil needs to be changed every three months. Engine coolant, transmission fluid, power steering fluid and brake fluid should all be inspected at the time of oil change and completely flushed every two years. When fluid levels are low, the engine and other parts are at risk of overheating. In addition, fluid contamination can occur resulting in poor performance and damaged parts.
2. Tires and brakes are essential to vehicle safety and performance. Inspect tires regularly when filling up the gas tank. Check tire pressure and tread, as well as other damage. Damaged tires should be replaced immediately. It is recommended that brakes be checked at least once per year and whenever there is any sign of poor brake performance.
3. Regular tune-ups are also critical for the life and performance of a vehicle. Check the vehicle's owner manual, or contact a Delaware County repair center, to determine the recommended interval for tune-ups. Tune-ups range from basic to extensive depending on the vehicle's needs. Regular tune-up services include changing spark plugs and filters. Spark plug wires, distributor, battery power, cables and fuel system should also be inspected and serviced if needed.
Simple maintenance and inspections mean less trouble down the road resulting in excessive repairs and damage to the vehicle. Quick inspections can be performed regularly at convenient times, such as while fueling, before leaving the house or upon returning. Even better is receiving regular, detailed inspections performed at any Delaware County repair center. Your car will thank you for it.

Solar ovens are a superb way to cook food for the do-it-yourself type of person looking to reduce the amount of energy they use in their home and take advantage of the free resource the sun provides. These products are not only helpful to reducing the always-increasing power bills, but they are also great for reducing the carbon footprint of the individuals who use them. Ovens in the home can require an immense amount of energy to heat up and maintain temp, whether gas or electricity is used. Overtime this can mean a small, but important amount of damage to the environment. For anyone looking to lower their bills, do right by the environment, and get delicious food, these products are a great choice.
These products aren't only for the environmentally or cost conscious consumer. They are also great for the camper as well. Many of these products are designed for rural farmers living far from electricity and so they are light and portable. These same design features can be useful to the portable eater as well. Campers often can't get the same great roasted flavors when out in the woods because to carry such a large device with gas would be immensely difficult. Solar ovens solve this problem.
Just because they are solar ovens, doesn't mean that they are solar powered as most people think of it. Instead, these products generate heat by focusing the rays of the sun through special reflecting plates and a glass top. These devices greatly increase the heat inside the oven quickly. This heat is then retained and after a long enough period, the interior of the oven will have a high enough temperature to roast vegetables, meats, and even bake bread. This requires that the oven be set out with enough time to allow both heating and cooking. For many this is simply the process of leaving the oven outdoors at all times or just placing it outside early in the day.
Unlike a traditional oven, these products will not have a simple set temperature. In order to use these products effectively, the oven needs to be carefully monitored and cooking times adjusted to make sure that the food will be ready. Most foods don't require much more than heat and time, but some foods, particularly breads, do require a very specific temperature to bake correctly. This may limit some dishes, however special recipes have been developed to help people work around these limitations.

With the job market being what it is many may find that they have to accept a job that is alot lower on the totem pole then what they are used to. For some, this shock may be to severe to bear but realize that what you used to do, may no longer be what's needed. In order to survive this depression we must become flexible and adapt to our new environment. Hope this helps those that are struggeling in our bold, new economy.-Nomad

When we think about people hunting for jobs, we often think about people looking for entry level jobs, but that is quickly becoming a thing of the past! With the economy in the shape that it is in, it is not unusual to find senior executives who are looking for a new career or who find that a new career is something that they are hunting. Whether by chance or by choice if you are someone who is in this position you will find that there are some challenges that you might be running into. If you are used to having a higher salary or you have a salary that would be difficult to match by your new employers, it can scare your interviewers off. Take some time and think about how you can account for this issue and also make sure that you keep a few tips in mind.
Remember that you should make sure that the hiring managers know that you are serious. A lot of companies are worried that advanced senior executives who are looking for work with them are merely dallying in the field and that they are not really interested. Your job is to show them how very invested and enthusiastic you are about working with them. If you have never worked in that field before, you need to do your research and you need to do it well. Show them that you know about the field that they work in as well as the industry that they inhabit and show them how eager you are to join it.
Another thing that people worry about with people who are overqualified is that they will not be team players. All of your experience will not mean anything to them if they are afraid that you will not put it to use for them. This would be the time to emphasize your soft skills and to show them how good they are. You need to show them that you are a team player and that you are interested in helping them get to where they are going. You need to be an excellent communicator and you need to show them how eager you are to work for them. Be blunt about your triumphs, but make sure that they do not feel as though you are trying to overwhelm them. This can be something that really puts them off your case.
When you are worried about being overqualified for your position, this often translates to the people who are doing the hiring being worried about money. If they think they cannot afford you, they are not going to give you a second glance. This is where you need to be perfectly blunt. Let them know that you are willing to negotiate on your salary and let them know why. The opportunity that you are looking for may be something that allows for you to be more negotiable on your salary and you will discover that they will reward your honesty.
Getting a job when you are overqualified can be irritating, but it is manageable, so see where it takes you.

I've been thinking about the Jihadist's attack on Fort Hood for a while and can't help but feel that this event happened because of our Government's complete ignorance of reality. They are sending some of our best and brightest, overseas, to fight the organization that is led by one of the FBI's Ten Most Wanted and they immediately disarm them the minute they step foot on America's soil. It is almost as if they are saying, we trust you enough to fight, bleed and die on other peoples land, but unfortunately, you can't be trusted at home.
In 1993, under the leadership of President Bill Clinton, the Army imposed new restrictions barring soldiers from carrying their personal firearms on base. Had this stupidity never occurred, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the alleged perpetrator of this horrible act of terrorism, would have been cut down in a hail of bullets before he could finish his first," Allahu Akbar." Instead, he was able to move freely throughout the Soldier Readiness Center for nearly 10 minutes and fire off 100 rounds killing 14, if you count the unborn child, and wounding 30 others. The helpless soldiers had to wait for a civilian Police Force to arrive before someone with any firepower was on site to deal with this Terrorist.
According to an editorial I read, all of "the public shootings in the United States in which more than three people have been killed have occurred in places where concealed handguns have been banned." Seems like there's a connection to me. I have always said, If a bad guy knows that the minute he pulls out his pistols, he'll be staring down the barrels of a dozen more pistols, he will more than likely rethink his first move. The problem arises when the bad guy, who never cared a rat's ass about the laws of the land in the first place, knows that he is more than likely the only one with a pistol. He then feels empowered to pull his pistol and steal, murder, and pillage.
The wife of a deploying soldier said it best when asked how she felt about her husband's coming deployment to Afghanistan. Her response? "At least he's safe there and he can fire back, right?"
Israel is under a constant threat of terrorism. Everybody and their brother is armed. Reservists carry their fully automatic weapons with them the majority of the time. It is now time for the Government to acknowledge our Constitutional rights and allow us the carry weapons for personal and public safety purposes. The Police will always be there just a few minutes too late. Forcing the public to relying on responding Police units only adds to the death total. We need to rearm our soldiers and the rest of the law abiding American people.

Instead, he was able to move freely throughout the Soldier Readiness Center for nearly 10 minutes and fire off 100 rounds killing 14, if you count the unborn child, and wounding 30 others.
My future plans entail something very similar. If only I can get my crap together. Bad credit and money are what stands in my way.(Like the rest of America). Of course, the economy might totally hit rock bottom and then all of my best laid plans will be for naught.
65,000 people in three weeks, applied for 2,000 new jobs at a VW plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
"We are overwhelmed by the response and we are very satisfied with the result," said Hans-Herbert Jagla, executive vice president of human resources for VW's Chattanooga operations. "It gives us the confidence that we will be able to hire all the capable and flexible people we need to build our cars safely and with the highest quality."
Nice that they are satisfied with the result. That's probably because the company has all of the bargaining power while the applicants have only the right to accept or decline the job offer. Realize that from now on you have to be on your game, all of the time, in order to get a job. With fierce competition like this, only the best 2,000 are going to be picked. Marginal employees with less then stellar backgrounds will more than likely get passed over. Another side effect of this economy is that they can cut wages, because the ball is fully in their court. Having more than enough applicants allows than to lower the starting pay and offer the jobs to the best qualified that are desperate enough to accept the job at the offered salary.

Below you will find the intro to the first section that will be titled Prepping 101.-Nomad
The Boy Scouts have a motto that reminds their members to, "Be Prepared." As the story goes, someone once asked Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of Boy Scouts, "Be prepared for what?"
His response of "Why, for any old thing, " may have been the foundation for an un-official movement of people who call themselves Preppers. These are your everyday, average Joes who think it wise to store up a little extra, just in case. Often confused with the survivalist movement of the '80s, preppers want nothing to do concepts associated with that movement. Many have heard the Government's repeated call for individuals to plan for their own well-being during a disaster. Others watch the complete failure of Government during the Hurricane Katrina crisis. Still, others, became uncomfortable with the wild spending and high unemployment that surfaced soon after the Democrats had complete control of both Legislative houses and the Presidency. Regardless of the reasons, a quiet movement began to spread across the United States and the rest of the globe.
People, in a large numbers, have lost their faith in Government. Many, for the first time, have come to grips with the startling revelation that they are all alone and that one will be coming to lend a helping hand. Ronald Reagen once said that the worst thing a person could hear is, "I'm from the Government and I'm here to help."
This section is designed to help you think about the process of getting prepared for the unexpected. After you have read this section you should be able to:
